Welcome to our Cyclotron Facility

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is an imaging modality that usually involves injection of radioactive tracers to visualize various organs. The tracer is produced through addition of a radioactive isotope to a pharmaceutical specific to the organ being imaged. The radioactive tracer emits gamma radiation, which is then imaged using devices as such as PET/CT and Gamma Cameras. Our Nuclear Medicine Department involves two PET/CT devices and a cyclotron.

Our Cyclotron Facility

A cyclotron is a machine used to accelerate charged particles to very high energies to produce radionuclides which are applied in imaging modalities in nuclear medicine. In 2018, Medya Diagnostic Center in collaboration with the Turkish Eczacıbaşı-Monrol company successfully established Iraq’s first cyclotron facility in the city of Erbil. Eczacibasi-Monrol Nuclear Products (Eczacıbaşı-Monrol Nükleer Ürünler), leads the development of the Turkish nuclear medicine market with the production of high-quality radiopharmaceuticals. Our cyclotron “Sumitomo HM-20” is a Japanese device which produces various radioactive materials that can be used as tracers to carry out medical procedures, medical imaging and research.

Certification

We are working to the standards of European Union Good Manufacturing Practice (EU GMP). EU GMP is a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to high quality standards. In 2019, Iraqi Radioactive Sources Regulatory Authority (IRSRA) formally appreciated MDC’s efforts in applying GMP standards.

Our Partners
In 2018, MDC, in collaboration with the Turkish Eczacıbaşı-Monrol company successfully established Iraqs first cyclotron facility in the city of Erbil. Eczacibasi-Monrol Nuclear Products (Eczacıbaşı-Monrol Nükleer Ürünler), leads the development of the Turkish nuclear medicine market with the production of high-quality radiopharmaceuticals. In 2001, Monrol, started the production of FDG which is required for the PET imaging, and established several cyclotron facilities in Turkey and also internationally in more than 25 countries including UAE, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. Additionally, Eczacıbaşı-Monrol produces a variety of radiopharmaceuticals for SPECT imaging.
